Dumbbell Lateral Raise

The Dumbbell Lateral Raise exercise is performed with dumbbells and it works the top of the shoulders. Alternatively this exercise can be performed on a cable system

Primary Muscle(s): Mid deltoid


Starting Position

  • Hold a pair of dumbbells in each hand
  • Stand with your feet slightly spread
  • Keep your back straight and your arms hanging at your sides

Exercise Movement

  • Raise dumbbells to shoulder level, keeping your elbows slightly bent
  • Pause briefly, then lower the weight to the start under control
  • Repeat as necessary keeping the movement smooth and continuous


*Variation: This exercise can be performed with cables on a cable crossover machine*
